Bar Code Printer

When implementing a bar code system for the first time or updating your equipment you may need to purchase a bar code printer.  This may be an easy task if you are purchasing your bar code printer along with your other bar code equipment.  However, if you are purchasing it separately you will need to make sure that it fits in with the other bar code products you have.

When purchasing a bar code printer you need to make sure that it is capable of printing the right symbology.  The symbology is the type of bar code labels you need to print.  You may require a printer that can print UPC labels or you may want a printer than can print Code 39. 

Certain bar code scanners may require your bar code printer to be able to print at a higher quality.  This may require you to find a printer with a higher resolution output and higher print quality.  Be sure to check with your bar code scanner’s manual or manufacturer to find out what is required of your bar code labels.

Another consideration is the environment that the bar code printer is going to be used in and what the bar code printer is going to have to endure.  If it is in a place that it will likely be tousled around a bit, than you may need a bar code printer that is designed to take a bit of abuse.  Otherwise you can pretty much choose any design that suits your needs and tastes.

The cost of your bar code printer is going to be a factor as well. However, you can’t do much about the cost besides shopping around. The truth remains that you get what you pay for. If you want a higher quality product you are probably going to pay for it.  However, there are instances where certain manufacturers will charge outrageously which is why you need to shop around.
