Barcodes are commonly included on items found in grocery and retail stores. As a means of determining price, and charging customers accordingly, manufacturers include barcodes. Barcodes serve many useful purposes. Aside from becoming a practical addition in the retail world, barcodes are also effective with helping manufacturers and businesses keep accurate record of inventory. Most products are recorded into databases. To do so quickly, items with barcodes can be easily scanned and the information recorded. When people think of barcode scanners, they likely imagine the devices used by cashiers in grocery stores. However, barcode scanners also include portable devices called barcode wands which easily record and store information.

Barcode wands are available in many sizes and styles. Typical wands used by inventory clerks include small pen-like instruments. These wands fit perfectly in pant, jacket, or shirt pockets. In fact, some barcode wands even include an attachment which allows the scanner to keep the wand around their neck.

Because barcode wands are portable, scanning large items is simple. In fact, a few grocery stores and retail outlets have begun using both stationary and portable barcode scanning devices. This way, if a customer purchases a large or heavy item, the cashier can easily scan the merchandise. Barcode wands of this nature generally consist of long ruler-like devices which connect to the register.

Aside from assisting cashiers and customers with checkout, barcode wands are also useful for persons completing a gift registry. If you have ever had a wedding shower, baby shower, or graduation party thrown in your honor, you’ve likely completed a gift registry. Adding items to a gift registry is simple – especially if using a barcode wand. Simply browse merchandise in a retail store. To include an item on the registry, use the barcode wand and scan the UPC or barcode number.
